Broadway is back….almost.
Magical, romantic and surreal — An American in Paris has been dazzling audiences around the globe since it first opened to widespread critical acclaim at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 2014. It’s now set to make a highly-awaited entry into Australia’s live theatre scene in 2022. The Australian Ballet, along with GWB Entertainment will present the Tony Award-winning musical comedy to Australia next year.
An American in Paris
Inspired by the 1951 film of the same name, the Broadway musical has been dubbed a tour de force owing to its classical music, timeless love story, captivating dance numbers and scintillating set design.
An American in Paris tells the story of a young American World War II vet who falls in love with a Parisian woman. The lavish romantic production includes popular songs by George and Ira Gershwin, including I Got Rhythm, But Not For Me and They Can’t Take That Away From Me.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with David Hallberg and The Australian Ballet and are excited for audiences to experience director-choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s extensive ballet scenes performed by classical ballet dancers at the peak of their artistic craft, woven into a blockbuster Broadway musical that celebrates love, beauty, art, and the timeless music of Gershwin,” GWB Entertainment’s Richelle Brookman said.
The musical is coming to most major Australian cities.
It will debut at Brisbane’s QPAC Lyric Theatre from January 8 to 30, 2022. The musical will then move to Adelaide in February at the Crown Theatre and Perth in February as well at the State Theatre.
It will then arrive in Melbourne in March at the Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre before wrapping up the season at Theatre Royal Sydney in April.
