The set-up you don’t see
Firstly, the candles arrive. Boxes open and hundreds then thousands of candles appear. The Candlelight staff quickly uses them to line pathways, more candles are placed all over the stage, and a few hundreds more ripple out in arcs. Then, one by one, the candles are lit and suddenly the space changes. Timber glows, edges soften, time loosens. At Perth Town Hall, the familiar brick and jarrah take on a cinematic warmth and it feels as though the familiar venue has been transformed into a sensational new space.
To put it in perspective: picture 15,000 candles all lined up… that candle line would be 15 times taller than Central Park! That’s the math of the magic.
When the music fades, the work still continues as each candle is turned off, lifted and carefully put back into boxes. The room returns to itself and the next day, it all happens again. Night after night, venue to venue, each layout rebuilt, each glow re-earned, so the experience stays fresh and unmistakably Candlelight.
