It’s been almost a year since Netflix announced that they’d scooped up the rights to the Chicken Run sequel, and even longer since the hit animation originally hit the big screen. It’s been 22 years, in fact, since Babs famously proclaimed “I don’t want to be a pie. I don’t like gravy!”.
Co-created by Peter Lord and Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park, the hit stop-animation film infiltrated British culture as no movie had for quite some time, and to this day, it reigns one of the best British-created films of all time. Now, Ginger, Rocky and co are set to return for a new adventure, with Netflix promising “a whole coop of new friends” in tow for the sequel.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
Announcing the news, Netflix said: “The CHICKEN RUN sequel is coming, and it’s called… CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET. Hatching only on Netflix in 2023.
“Starring Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi & Bella Ramsey, DAWN OF THE NUGGET revisits your favourite chickens Ginger and Rocky, plus a whole coop of new friends.”
Following Ginger and Rocky, who are now living in a ‘human-free chicken paradise’ with new arrival, Molly, the movie sees Ginger and her family once again facing a huge new threat, forcing Ginger to gather up her troops once more in a bit to protect their freedom. The team promises Mission Impossible-level stakes for our favourite chickens, as well as plenty more lovable and laughable moments.
The official synopsis reads: “Having pulled off an escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has found a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new threat, and Ginger and her team decide to break in.”
The main roles of Ginger and Rocky will be played by Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi.
But wait, there’s more!
To make things even better, Netflix also announced the return of another Aardman classic, Wallace & Gromit. The writing and storyboarding process as already begun, and the as-of-yet untitled film is set for a 2024 release.
No exact dates have yet been revealed for the premiere of Chicken Run, but in the meantime, does anyone fancy a bitta pie? I’m hungry all of a sudden.
