Following a sold-out debut in Perth, ChorusOz returns to Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia on Saturday, 26 September at 5 pm. However, this time, the program is Orff’s Carmina Burana, one of the most viscerally thrilling works in the choral repertoire.
The event brings together a chorus of around 200 singers recruited from across Western Australia and beyond. The vocalists will rehearse and perform under the baton of Brett Weymark OAM, Artistic and Music Director of Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Joining them on stage are three Perth-based professional soloists: soprano Prudence Sanders, tenor Perry Joyce, and baritone James Clayton, alongside the Perth Symphony Orchestra.
Carmina Burana is a well-known piece, and you’ve definitely heard snippets before. It begins with the instantly recognisable crash of O Fortuna through drinking songs, lullabies, and surging choral climaxes. Soon, Carmina Burana moves through medieval themes of fate, love, and revelry with a relentless energy that will leave both singers and audiences stunned. Weymark describes it as “a ‘no holds barred’ snapshot of medieval life and a riotous delight, as enjoyable to listen to as it is to sing.”
Anyone can sing, but registrations close on 14 September
ChorusOz is as much a participatory experience as a concert. As a result, singers of all abilities are welcome. Previous participants have included complete newcomers performing with a full orchestra for the first time. The two-day format combines intensive rehearsal with performance, making it accessible without demanding years of choral experience.
