The beloved Australind train connecting Perth to Bunbury is finally restarting its operations in two months, improved in the years since it was halted. In November 2023, the original train closed its doors for upgrades, and now, a date for its long-awaited return has been announced.
On June 29, 2026, the first of the four new trains will be unveiled. This new fleet is all set to take over from the coaches which have been connecting the two cities for more than two years. While the three remaining trains will start running soon, coaches will continue to supplement services.
What’s New in the Australind Train Fleet?
The Armadale line closing down in 2023 marked the end of an era. The same railcars had traversed the route since 1987, marking 36 years since its inception. Termed the METRONET Byford Rail Extension, the expansion of the line and building of newer cars has led to considerable interest.
With LED lighting, USB-C charging ports, better accessibility, and more, the new trains are sure to open a new chapter for commuters. The Armadale line fleet features three-car trains with brand-new sleek interiors. To pay respect to Aboriginal culture, the exteriors will have original art by a local indigenous creator. Apart from this, the Australind will have storage up to 14 bicycles and an improved buffet in its trains.
Name the Armadale Line Trains and Be Part of the First Ride
Considering the line’s importance to locals (and tourists), a contest to name the four trains is in effect. Till May 18, 2026, send in entries reflecting a specific symbol (person, animal, or object) of the South West, or something otherwise personal. Explanations are welcomed, and the winners gets two tickets to the first Australind ride on June 28, 2026.
The route of the new Australind train remains the same. Starting at Armadale, it goes through Byford, Mundijong, Serpentine, North Dandalup, Pinjarra, Waroona, Yarloop, Cookernup, Harvey and Brunswick Junction, ending at Bunbury.
