Perth has been experiencing thunderstorms over the last few days. We’re not made of sugar, but high gusts of wind have accompanied the showers, causing significant concern. Tuesday, March 28, saw approximately 18mm of rainfall, and the situation is not about to ease anytime soon. In fact, if you have any plans this weekend, we recommend considering this before venturing outside. Read more about the rain from May 30 to June 1 to ensure your WA Day activities don’t suffer.
Heavy rain to affect WA and Perth through the weekend, might ease on WA Day
With a low-pressure system forming over the WA coast starting Saturday, May 30, light showers are expected the whole day. In fact, the Bureau of Meteorology predicts high velocity winds for Perth Local Waters, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast, and Esperance Coast.
However, the worst will not hit the South West coast till Sunday (May 31) evening, when the system moves inwards. As possibly the strongest low-pressure system of the season, rain of up to 25 mm will be accompanied by strong gusts of wind (>90-100 kmph) to the CBD (and other parts of the South West). This, along with the cold front, will yield heavy rainfall, particularly in the second half of the day, with flash floods expected.
By Monday, June 1, the low-pressure system should have eased a bit. Therefore, the wind and rain intensity will reduce a fair bit, with some showers in the morning.
Due to the strong winds predicted this weekend, keep your gardens clear of any furniture, toys, and other bits and bobs. Additionally, if you’re stepping out this weekend, particularly near the coastline, be extra careful and avoid surfing. Ensure you leave enough time to account for traffic and drive cautiously.
