Just about 19 km from Fremantle in Perth CBD, Rottnest Island is heaven for lovers of cute animals and glorious beaches. Imagine a place where the humble quokka (yes, the smiley marsupial) runs free, a stone’s throw away from a plethora of marine life— that’s Rottnest or Wadjemup as the original inhabitants of the island (Whadjuk Noongar people) call it.
Although not very large — just about 11 kilometers long — Rottnest is still a major tourist hub for locals as well as travellers from around Australia and beyond. From peering down from the Wadjemup Lighthouse to whale watching, capped off with catching a glimpse of quokkas, the island offers something for everyone! Here is everything you need to know about exploring Rottnest Island.
Things to do at Rottnest Island

Besides quokkas, Rottnest Island is home to indigenous flora and fauna that make the short trip worth it. From humpback whales during migration season (September to December) to corals dotting the clear blue waters, nature lovers will be spoilt for choice. Snorkeling from the designated trail off Little Salmon Bay (pictured above) or The Basin offers glimpses of the rich aquatic life underneath, enthralling even newbie snorkelers.
Don’t worry if you’re not too fond of swimming in open waters. There is lots for you to do out of a wetsuit as well. Visit the well-known Wadjemup Lighthouse or learn about the island with an Aboriginal walking tour. For the history buffs, the Wadjemup Museum offers a little more insight about the tiny landmass close to Perth.
Best Spots for Quokka Spotting
You asked for cute animals and we delivered. Beware that despite their smiles, these woodland creatures are not pets. In fact, attempting to touch a quokka will incur fines up to $300!
Thomson Bay and Garden Lake are the best places to view these marsupials— especially because those near the Bay are used to human interactions. If you’re planning to visit the Lighthouse (and you should), quokkas will most certainly greet you. Keep an eye out as you walk just off Digby Drive and its intersection for photo opportunities!
Getting There
You can book ferries from Fremantle (Victoria Quay) or Perth (Barrack Street Jetty or Hillary’s Boat Harbour) to reach this quokka paradise in about 1.5 hours. A seaplane or helicopter ride is another option that offers scenic views of the island. While no private vehicles are allowed on Rottnest Island, tours usually include bus rides or bikes.
