The annual Fremantle Festival: 10 nights in Port never fails to host an epic line-up of experiences – from contemporary music, giant immersive projections, protest exhibitions, roaming performances and stirring cultural experiences, bringing even more life to the streets of Freo across the ten day span.
As part of the festival, Soak And Plunge has made a return to the shores, but unfortunately for some, sold out in record time. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept; Soak And Plunge set up a number of al fresco hot tubs along the shoreline of Fremantle Waterfront. As you bathe, panoramic views treat the eyes all while bath-side service tends to your wine and snack needs. It’s a breathtaking experience to say the least.
But never fear, if you’re after a similar experience, Freo’s iconic Neighbourhood Sauna has recently opened South Beach Sauna – a shipping container that’s been transformed into a dry Finnish sauna, right on the waterfront.
It’s the first of its kind in Perth, and the concept gives you the opportunity to encounter the elements like never-before by ways of; absorbing the transcendent heat inside the toasty space, followed by stepping out into the crux of winter and feeling the intense sensation of the icy Indian Ocean between sweats, or standing underneath the cold showers or rain.
Created by the talented builders at Alchemy Saunas, they’ve pieced together a truly world-class space, while keeping the traditional dry Finnish sauna alive. In comparison to regular Joe saunas, the Finnish counterpart encompasses a dry heat, instead of a steam room-style sauna; wet sizzles and moisture only play a slight role in the traditional dry Finnish sauna.
The sauna has been council approved for the winter months only, but South Beach Sauna owner, Brigid Marciano is working with other councils, namely City Beach and Margaret River in the hope of making the experience year-round.
The South Beach Sauna can be booked in individual hour-long blocks, casual packages, or through their Beach Club membership. And don’t worry if you don’t have a towel handy, hire towels await your steamy cheeks.
