Splendour XR is streaming on your devices this July.
The creators of the iconic music and arts festival Splendour in the Grass have created an entirely virtual version of this event, called Splendour XR. They’ve digitally recreated the North Byron Parklands site, using technology to create something that will keep you immersed and engaged. Walk amongst the green hills of Byron Bay or head to the main Amphitheatre to see all your favourite acts.

On top of the music acts, the creators have included a bunch of other things to keep you occupied. Head to the Comedy Club if you need a laugh, explore The Global Village for some mindfulness and check out the Splendour Forum for some hot debates. There’s also a Tipi Forest which promises light shows, lasers, psychedelic arts and genre-bending sounds from music producers.
Children can also join in the fun at Little Splendour where there’ll be all sorts of interactive activities to keep them having fun. If COVID-19 is getting you down, there will also be an online medical centre that will offer assistance to anyone struggling with their mental health.
How will it work?
Splendour XR is a two-day event that will take place on Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25. The events will run from 12pm-2am AEST, offering you a large enough window to enjoy the festival with friends from overseas. You can wander through the virtual world at your own pace, or “teleport” from stage to stage to watch your favourite artists.
If you’re using a VR device or gaming PC, you can create your own customisable avatar to roam around the virtual world. If you’re using a web browser or mobile device to join the fun, you won’t be able to customise your avatar but you’ll be able to pick from a wide selection of pre-made characters.
Tickets are available for either single-day events or for the whole weekend. These will be available to purchase over multiple release windows. On top of that, there are also Party Packs you can purchase, which are there to help bring your experience to life. In the Party Packs you can find items like wristbands, tumblers and posters. There’s even a pack that offers festoon lighting and an inflatable sign if you want to deck out your living room.
What happens after?
If you missed anything, after the weekend you’ll be able to purchase a Relive ticket. This ticket doesn’t include the virtual world experience. Instead, it will give you on-demand access to watch the performances and any video content for seven days after the event.
Meanwhile, the real-life Splendour In The Grass is still expected to go ahead in November.
Early bird tickets are on sale now. First release tickets will be available on Thursday, June 10.
