There ain’t nothing like listening to live tunes and watching the world go by, especially at sunset. Perth and its surrounding suburbs are lucky enough to have a thriving jazz scene, and The Ellington Jazz Club is taking it up a notch this month,
Every Friday evening throughout May, The Ellington will host their Sundowner Concert Series at Yagan Square in Perth’s city centre. And better yet, they’re going to be completely free of charge!
The Square’s amphitheatre will come alive on May 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm each evening with world-class, big-band performances from our city’s top jazz vocalists and musicians.
The open-air concerts boast a versatile line-up, featuring James Flynn, Milford Street Shakers, Catherine Summers, and Gemma Luxton to end the month on a high note.
James Flynn will present The Music of Frank Sinatra along with his seven-piece band on Friday 5 May. The timeless hits pull on the heart strings with the soothing lyrics from a bygone era.
On the flipside, the Milford Street Shakers will take over the stage on Friday 12 May with their Motown and soul beats. The 11-piece groovers will have you tapping along, to say the least, with singing along welcome to their class renditions of classics.
On Friday 19 May, Catherine Summers will bring hits of Elton John, David Bowie, and The Beatles to life. A six-piece band will join Catherine on stage for the musical journey of three legends.
And bringing the Sundowner Concert Series to a close is Gemma Luxton on Friday 26 May with The Music of Adele. In what is said to be an ‘unmissable’ evening, the singer will be belting out chat-topping hits from four of Adele’s albums in a moving performance with her five-piece band.
In conjunction with The Ellington Jazz Club, event producer, Cleo Schurrer says, “We are thrilled to bring together such an exceptional line-up for the Friday Sundowner Concerts at Yagan Square in May.”
“Each week our world-class musicians will showcase the timeless appeal of icons past and present, performing their greatest hits and classics in a two-hour live show that is completely free of charge,” Cleo shares.
Get comfy with a BYO cushion on rug, but make sure you leave the alcohol at home as it is not permitted at the Yagan Square Amphitheatre. Roll on up early to secure a good spot, and let the good times sausage roll from 5:30pm onwards!
