We all love a good ‘dad joke’ – they’re cringe in the most light-hearted of ways, and eye-roll worthy at the best of times; whatever you do, don’t say “Hey dad, I’m hungry.” Well luckily comedy is so much more than a responsive, “Hey Hungry, I’m dad” – and the brand new WA Comedy Week is here to save you!
The seven-day comedy festival is set to run from Monday 7 through to Sunday 13 November and has over 25 hilarious shows across three iconic venues in store for all your giggling needs.
The week-long festivities will provide a platform for Western Australia (WA) comedy talent across all its funny forms to share their unique sense of humour with local audiences, with stand-up, improv, variety, musical and more on the cards.
A few of the WA Comedy Week highlight acts confirmed for this year include: Rove McManus (Rove Live), Peter Rowsthorn (Kath & Kim), Janelle Koenig (Last Comic Standing), and a bunch of chuckle-inducing shows with the likes of TOD Talks, Flynn V’s Freakout, and Funniest Femmes hosted by Famous Sharron.
There’s even something a lil’ different on the cards – enjoy from the audience or on the stage with Matt Hale’s hypnotic show, Bonkers. The multi-award winning hit sees ordinary folk like yourself up on the stage getting wild in an imagination dreamland – it’s a right laugh from start to finish. It’s interactive to say the least, but of course if you’re happy to simply watch on and enjoy from the comfort of your seat, please do so.
The Rechabite located in the heart of Northbridge will serve as the WA Comedy Week’s main hub, utilising its hall and goodwill club as performing spaces. Whilst iconic comedy venues such as Oasis Comedy Club located upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel, and Fremantle Comedy Factory at Federal Hotel will host a number of acts too – to spread the laughter throughout P-town.
As well as the shows, WA Comedy Week will also feature a variety of free comedy workshops and industry networking events to help develop WA comedy talent and forge a stronger local industry.
WA Comedy Week is the brainchild of leading WA comedy producers, Ronan Freeburn of Rottofest, Freo Royale, Goon & Nugz Festival, and Crushers Comedy Gala, along with Colin Ebsworth of Ebsworth Tonight and Underground Comedy.
Festival Director, Ronan Freeburn says, “WA Comedy Week is all about celebrating our fantastic local comedy scene. We do some things really well in WA such as live music, craft beer and footy. Comedy is something else that we do really well and we want WA locals to own it.”
WA has come out with some huge names in the world of comedy such as Jim Jefferies, Rove McManus, Tim Minchin, Peter Rowsthorn, Claire Hooper, Dave Hughes, Joel Creasey, and Ozzy Man – now that ain’t something to turn your nose up at!
