Christmas festivities are well and truly underway in and around the City of Perth, and what a better place to be awe-inspired by dazzling lights than the reflective Elizabeth Quay.
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 November, the Quay will be illuminated by City of Light Show – a Christmas themed exhibit thanks to 500 colourful drones brightening the night skies over the Swan River. They’ll be flying in formation to create shapes, objects, and words which Santa will even be stunned by.
From 5pm, Barrack Square will become a hot spot of entertainment with elves, ballerinas, and stilt walkers bringing some Chrissy cheer, while a silent disco and LED hula-hoop workshop will keep the kids occupied if they decide they’ve had enough of Santa’s sleigh and reindeers.
The Thundercorps Marching Band will even be making a special appearance between 6pm and 7pm on the Sunday evening delivering some sweet Christmas tunes.
Forget cooking dinner over the weekend too, there’ll be plenty of food trucks parked from 5pm up showcasing cuisine from around the globe – there’s a tasty treat in store for all to enjoy along the foreshore.
But the star of the show, the Christmas themed drone show that is, will kick off at 8pm on both nights and wrap up at 8:30pm. A narrated soundtrack will accompany the display making for an all ’round sensory experience. But don’t stand too far back, otherwise you’ll miss out on the ear-y delights.
The City of Perth recommends viewing the drone show from Elizabeth Quay or Barrack Square – other locations like South Perth or Kings Park will skewwhiff the images in the night’s sky and are likely to be reversed or simply not as spectacular as pre-imagined.
The City of Light Show is a free entry event and is brought to the people of P-Town by the City of Perth and is supported by Lotterywest. A map of the City of Light Show can be found here, so you can make a beeline and snap yourself a good pozzie pronto.
