Located in a wee nook smack bang in the middle of Perth city’s St George’s Terrace lies a sandwich shop by the name of Joey Zaza’s.
Taking inspiration from New York-style sanga delis, Joey Zaza’s are best known for their Nonna’s Meatball Sub, which has propelled its cult-like following.
The husband-and-wife team behind the CBD spot decided it was high time their grandmother’s Italian meatball recipe – that’s been in the family for a whopping 80 years – should be shared with the world, and the people of Perth in particular.
The drool-worthy sub is comprised of four hand-rolled meatballs, a lathering of basil pesto, a sprinkling of mozzarella, nonna’s secret Napoli tomato sauce, and a few bits of fresh basil, all tucked nicely into a Calabrese panini – just take a look.
As well as the meatballs, you can also find inventive, delicious sandwiches like the Jayzee Reuben, featuring four-hour, slow-cooked corned beef, crunchy slaw, tangy pickles, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut in rye bread.
The menu also features classics such as continental rolls, toasted ham and cheese croissants, and breakfast bagels, with nothing priced over $15.
The buzzing spot also stocks a range of sweetie treaties to sort out those afternoon lows – think cinnamon scrolls by Spirals Cinnamon, caramel slices and brownies, which are bound to see you through the day. Oh, and coffee by Blacklist Coffee Roasters doesn’t go astray, either.
Plonk yourself upon Joey Zaza’s street-side seating and watch the world go by, or cosy up inside and ponder the overheard sammich orders. You can order ahead of time too, in case you have to run back to the office.
