Winter officially arrived in WA with a big splash. The amount of unprecedented rain is expected to continue in June. However, there is much to look forward to, with the cool weather kicking off winter festivals. About 16 km from Perth CBD, Melville Midwinter will celebrate and honour the Noongar season of Makuru with a night of music, dance, and warm beverages. This free festival for the whole family will be held on June 20, 2026, the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
Melville Midwinter to light up the city this June
Taking place by the shores of Dyoondalup Point Walter, 2026’s Midwinter fest features an eclectic mix of artists. Think local musicians and dancers, Noongar artists, and poets about embracing the winter chill. Add in cosy fires, twinkling lights, and community, and it’s a party.
Led by Perth native songwriter and musician Peter Bibby as Musical Director, Carla Geneve, Nelson Mondlane, and Emily Barker are some other musicians set to perform at Melville Midwinter. Hoping to reconcile winter with the “idea of rebirth“, Bibby connects the themes of seeking warmth in a frigid world in his set with the festival as a whole.
Apart from music, expect a dance station choreographed by award-winning contemporary artist Brooke Leeder, where movement blends with introspection. Then, you can witness the shadow puppet show by Noongar cultural educators and artists Rickeeta and Alton Walley. Additionally, look forward to Ballardong Noongar writer and educator Casey Mulder‘s specially commissioned piece for the evening that will bring together place, season, and gathering through language.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic to sit and enjoy the chilly evening at the festival. You can also bring a mug or tumbler to sample the hot soup and other beverages on offer. Peruse the lantern-lit area, munch on a toasty marshmallow, and take in the Melville Midwinter fest!

The organisers recommend carpooling or walking due to limited parking. ACROD and general parking will be available at the Point Walter Boat Ramp car park, on the eastern side of the Reserve. But be prepared for a fair bit of walking to reach the venue.

How to get there
Located 20-25 minutes south of Perth CBD, driving is the fastest way to reach the festival venue. From the CBD, make your way to Wellington Street and State Route 65. Then, join State Route 2, diverting to Canning Highway/National Route 1/State Route 6. Finally, take Burke Drive to the Point Walter Boat Ramp parking, and walk down via Honour Avenue.
