Cottesloe is commonly the place to be in terms of art – hosting the annual Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. As well as the infamous sculpture display, Gullotti Galleries on Napoleon Street is set to present the works of global street-art-meets-pop-art phenomenon, Thierry Guetta, a.k.a. Mr. Brainwash.
Opening Monday 8 August, the exhibition will showcase the thrilling work that has earned Mr. Brainwash a fan following across the world – from Madonna and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee.
The LA-based artist is considered one of the most dynamic and provocative identities on the international art scene. And the colourful, larger-than-life artist will put Perth on his Life Is Beautiful map through the gob-smacking show.
A few highlights of the exhibition are: a 1.82 metre-tall spray can, a 3 metre-tall sculpture of a horse, and the original Perth Is Beautiful artwork. The signature piece is a joyful 55 centimetre by 76 centimetre silkscreen on paper artwork depicting two youngsters on a spray-painted park bench looking across the Swan River to the iconic Perth skyline.
“I started doing some research about Perth and found out about the Swan River. I thought the name had something poetic about it and the black swan is something very special,” Mr. Brainwash shares.
“I hope the people of Perth will look at life through the eyes of their inner child and look at their cherished city as if it was for the first time, re-discovering it with excitement.
“It’s about seeing with our heart and the innocence we had in childhood. Life is beautiful, the world is beautiful, Perth is beautiful.
If you’re really into the art world – you can catch Mr. Brainwash during the VIP launch of Perth Is Beautiful on 7 August via video link. He’ll be at Gullotti Galleries in somewhat in spirit to talk about his art and answer any questions you may have.
The exhibition, Perth Is Beautiful runs from 8 August until 19 September, feast your eyes with the vibrant artworks while it’s in town!
