If you’re looking for a day trip to escape the city but don’t want to travel too far, look no further than Penguin Island. Home to the world’s largest colony of the smallest penguin species, this island is perfect for nature and wildlife lovers alike and can be visited from mid- September to early June.
As the name hints, one of the main attractions of Penguin Island is getting up close to the island’s resident penguins. After arriving via the five-minute ferry from the mainland, head on over to the Penguin Experience Discovery Centre to meet 10 little penguins. You can even watch them be fed if you visit during feeding times.
If you want to enhance your wildlife experience during your visit, hop on a Dolphin, Penguin and Sea Lion Cruise, which includes ferry tickets, a penguin feeding show, and the chance to catch an array of local wildlife from the boat. Not to mention a friendly crew onboard and complimentary digital photos of your experience.
You can also make a full day out of it by exploring the natural landscape Penguin Island has to offer. Think hidden rock pools you can swim in, cliffs, sea caves, natural bridges, lookouts, as well as beach activities such as swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, and stand-up paddle boarding. Oh, and be sure to grab a coffee and a bite to eat at Pengos Cafe.
