Leederville has become quite the place to be over the past few years – home to a number of newfangle restaurants and bars including, Will St., Naber and IIII, and Servo. Not to mention the very cool Besk, just across the freeway in neighbouring West Leederville. Joining the Leederville ranks on Wednesday 20 July is the new satay hut and bar, Popeye’s.
The new holiday-inspired space is heavy on the island theme and easy on the good times – complete with thatched umbrellas to shelter you from the storm. Popeye’s are dishing out Indonesian, Malaysian and Chinese-stlye cuisine, featuring their infamous signature satays. Head Chef, Scotty Solomon, formerly at Chinta, is leading the kitchen – so you already know the fare is going to be just scrumptious, especially as the menu offerings change with seasonality and availability of produce.
Speaking of – feast your eyes on these particular Popeye’s dishes below.
1. Signature satays with pickled vegetables
2. Fried spiced tofu, yuzu mayo, yakitori sauce, crispy shallot, garlic, chilli
3. Spiced corn poppers, toasted coconut, garlic oil, Thai basil, chilli
4. Fried chicken wings, secret sauce
Popeye’s share, “We wanted to bring a little bit of that fun and escapism to Leederville, creating a small urban oasis where it should feel like you’re on holiday.”
“Popeye is an old Indonesian guy who runs one of our favourite bars of all time, on the tiny island of Gili Air. Laid back without a care in the world, spending time with Popeye, was to truly escape the world.
“Just like being on holiday, feel free to pop in for a quick drink on your way somewhere else or opt to settle in and stay as long as you like,” they say.
The casual and cool Popeye’s will be open for dinner and drinks from Wednesday through to Sunday, and for lunch Friday to Sunday on Oxford Street.
