If you’re a movie buff, enjoying those made on shoestring budgets by talented rookie filmmakers, Perth is the place to be. The Revelation Perth International Film Festival is back for its 29th year, with 12 full days of screening 170 international films across city venues. Hoping to build a community around experiencing films, the festival takes place from 8 to 19 July 2026.
Revelation Perth International Film Festival returns in July
An official AACTA Awards Qualifying Film Festival, Revelation screens a mix of indie, international cinema, and documentary filmmaking. By focusing on emerging filmmakers, the film festival seeks to explore the potential of visual culture through movies.
Previously, Revelation included interactive elements such as retrospective screenings, live scores, expanded cinema performances, exhibitions, VR, installation works, free industry workshops, and an open-access academic sidebar. They also had live soundtrack performances of Goblin (Suspiria), New Pollutants (Metropolis), Viola Dana (The General), and more.
Apart from riveting performances (on and off screen), 2026 marks the 6th WA Screen Culture Awards. According to its official program, the Awards “celebrate innovation and achievement in the WA screen sector from over the last 12 months and across all moving image forms”. Spotlighting West Australian filmmakers at the Westralia Day at the Backlot showcase, it attempts to give local talent a bigger stage with commissions.
This year’s program is varied, and several exciting films have caught our eye. With documentaries like Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie (Alex Gibney) and American Doctor (Poh Si Teng) and features including Death of an Undertaker (Christian Byers) and Rosebush Pruning (Karim Aïnouz), the 2026 Revelation Perth International Film Festival is worth a visit.
