Whether it’s the sweltering summertime or the middle of a frosty winter, ice cream is never not a good snack.
The icy cream industry in Australia reels in a cool $1.9 billion a year, and there’s a new Western Australian small-batch brand that’s been hitting the West Aussie sweet spot, Tommy Moo Moo’s.
You might’ve seen the catchy company’s tubs on local supermarket shelves, having launched in November of 2022 – prime frozen dessert weather.
While Tommy Moo Moo’s may be new to the supermarket scene, they have been supplying the goods to Get Chunky, one of Perth’s famed New York-style cookie joints, under their business Take 5 Ice Cream Parlour for years.
Each flavour-packed Tommy Moo Moo’s ice cream is produced by Italian-born, Michael Farina who spent his youth near Lake Como in Northern Italy, where he learnt the art of ice cream by working in his father’s patisserie from the age of 11.
Just over a decade later, Michael found himself in Perth where he met fellow Italian ice cream connoisseur and now partner, Mariangela – a match made in the frozen-section heaven.
Inspired by traditional family recipes, the duo’s Tommy Moo Moo’s utilises premium, classic ingredients including milk from Western Australian farms, fresh strawberries, and bubblegum paste imported straight from Michael’s motherland.
From the sweet and salty caramel tickle, and fruity zing of berrylicious, to kids’ favourite bubble blast, vegan choice vanillarific and the double choc hit of choc-a-bloc, Tommy Moo Moo’s is hitting a market sweet spot.
The pair chose soy milk as the plant-based option as they believe that it’s the perfect carrier for their new natural, fruity-sweet vanilla flavour.
“We wanted to provide a non-diary choice to meet the demands of a growing market, but without sacrificing any taste, creamy texture or flavour,” Michael says.
Michael makes the entire range in small batches in a commercial kitchen in Perth’s suburbs, using his dad’s traditional Italian ice-cream recipe as inspiration.
“It’s a premium product, with no short cuts and no base mixes. Simply classic ingredients, either sourced locally or imported from Italy.
“Like many small-batch products, our ice-creams can be a welcome surprise for people who have only ever tasted mass-produced before,” Michael shares.
Satisfying your sweet craving while supporting local has never been easier, with Tommy Moo Moo’s up for grabs in 500ml take-home tubs via a growing network of independent supermarkets and gourmet grocers in and around Perth. Check out Tommy Moo Moo’s Instagram for further stockist information.
