Sure, we do have some amazing beaches in and around Perth. And sure, a salty swim in the waves is a great time. But there’s nothing like finding a swimming hole and soaking in the lush waters of lakes, falls, and dams. Luckily for us, Perth certainly isn’t lacking in magical swimming holes near the city. Here’s a list of our favourites.
1. Rocky Pool
This lush swimming spot can be found in Kalamunda National Park, just over half an hour from Perth. You’ll need to bushwalk 5km along a challenging trail to get to Rocky Pool. But the walk itself boasts awesome valley views. So not only are you blessed with a scenic hike, but also rewarded with a refreshing swim.
2. Serpentine Falls
One of our favourite day trips, Serpentine Falls is just under an hour from Perth. This cascading waterfall is perfect for a refreshing soak. However, because the area is a wildly popular spot for swimming and hiking, we recommend arriving early to beat the crowds. The park opens at 8.30am .
3. Honeymoon Pools
This lush little spot by the Collie River is perfect for those wanting a little more from their camping adventure. Pitch a tent near the Honeymoon Pools, which is a 2-hour drive from Perth, and spend your day swimming and enjoying the sweet sweet serenity. Due to it being a small campsite with only 20 spots, though, you’ll want to organise your trip well in advance. Click here to book your campsite.
4. Lane Poole Reserve
Located along the Murray River just out of Dwellingup, Lane Poole Reserve is a magical swimming hole, and much more. Think stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing and bushwalking. You can also make a weekend out of it by camping on the river.
5. Stockton Lake
You’ve probably seen that WA has some of the most Instagrammable blue lakes in Australia. You may have read about them in our feature article guide to the Collie region. But seriously, we’ve never seen water as blue as Stockton Lake. You’ll find this hidden gem just over two hours from Perth, and it’s popular for swimming, boating, and skiing. So if you’re into the water activities, this is the spot for you. Please note though: the water at Stockton Lake is mildly acidic, which gives it that stunning but artificial colour. So if you or someone in your gang has sensitive skin, we recommend limiting your exposure to the water.
6. Lake Leschenaultia
Just under an hour east of Perth, you’ll find the wonderful Lake Leneschaultia. This sand-shored lake is perfect for floating, swimming, and all the other things you love doing on the water. So soak up on the rays on “lake” time, fire up a barbecue with your gang, and explore the area via a 3km walking trail.
7. Logue Brook Dam
This dog-friendly dam is tucked away near Cookernup, around 1.5 hours from Perth. Here you’ll find a serene spot to swim, fish and more. There’s also a campsite you can stay at right on the water. So why not make a weekend out of it? The renowned Bibbulmun Track also cuts through the bushland near Logue Brook Dam as well, so you can go for a hike and then cool off in the water afterwards.
8. Bicton Baths
If you’re not keen on a long drive but want to have a splash in a magical swimming hole, look no further than Bicton Baths. Just 20 minutes from the CBD, this 30-metre pool is planted on the Swan River, offering you that natural swimming feel, just without the travel time. Be sure to look out for dolphins while you’re there and soak up the views.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this list of magical swimming holes near Perth!
